2008/6/26 I Am The Only HylicEvery time I introduce myself to others, I always have to spell my name to them, and even that they always say, " Is it [hilik] or [hailik]?" At first, I would be patient enough to tell them that it should be [hailik], and I would explain to them why I chose this name. Then I found that no matter how much I try, still there are majority of people out there pronouncing as [hilik]. So I am tired, and I would say both are ok now. It is hard, because I guess I am the only one in the entire world whose first name is Hylic. That's something, isn't it? Well, when I first realized that I should give myself an English name in junior high, I was using Fred, because it starts with an "F". But I seldom used it, because there was little practical use for an English name at that time. Then I found "F" words should not be my first name when I was a freshman, so I started to look for a name starting with an "H". Finding a suitable name is really hard, especially for a perfectionist like me. Most of the first names either have good meanings but sound quite stupid, or sound cool but have not so cool meanings. After pondering all the pros and cons, I finally decided to use "Hylic" as my first name, even though it is not even a name. I told myself that if I use this name, maybe it will be a name after I get famous...LOL...Quite cocky, I know. The reason is because it just sounds like my Chinese given name, and it's cool, though its meaning is not so cool. I am ok with it. I know perhaps if I was a kid in junior high in the states, kids are going to make fun of the "weird" name. But guess what, I am not in the states, and adults don't even care about the meaning of a person's name. I am not even an American, so having an exotic name is the advantage that we should enjoy. So I convinced myself to stick to it no matter what. And now it's getting bigger--I started to register the name whenever it is needed, which makes it really difficult to change if I want to, since changing a name is like a chain reaction-everything will be changed. So at first I was willing to use this name, and now I have to use the name. I guess I am really tied to "Hylic"...LOL. It's awesome, and I am freakin' enjoying it. 2008/6/25 Too Good To Knock The Door?It was an ordinary morning when I got up and finished shower. Hanging the towel up, I just put up my underpants, and the door was opened by the Ayi, famous for the big mouth and non-stop lecturing. I just noticed some finger pointing and raised voice, but couldn't understand what's she was talking about-Shanghai dialect. So I continued looking for my clothes. I tried several times to tell her to speak Mandarin, but I just could not chime in. After 'listening to' her bitching for several minutes', I finally got the chance to speak a little bit. Though it was short, it was quite affective. "I don't understand what you are saying." She stopped suddenly, seemingly quite frustrated. Several seconds later, she spoke again, apparently much more concise, "You must move out by the end of the month!" I nodded, still not looking at her, as I found the situation was quite embarrassing. She turned away leaving, and slapped the door. Darn! That was unfortunate-my good mood in the morning was so ruthlessly deprived! The next morning, at the same time as the day before, she 'broke' into another room next to me. My neighbor classmate was not that lucky-he was still in bed, and was waken up by Ayi's preaching. 2008/6/22 iPod Nano 3rd GenMy 120G hard drive has arrived, and I thought it would be ok to buy an iPod online as well. Then I thought twice, and decided to buy it in a store, since chances of getting a contraband or a fake one are still there online. Seeing is believing. Together with an iPod adaptor and a plastic protecting case, I got them all at one time. As I expected, the sound quality is not outstanding, and yet the little cute appearance of the nano is quite adorable.
2008/6/19 5 BabiesI thought she just got fat because I always feed her on her favorite food, but I didn't really care that much since I got another fatter girl who just eats and sleeps. It was raining yesterday and I got back quite late. Actually it was my first time to work after 6pm, and I was really surprised to find that my little fat hamster had 5 little cute hamsters already. What a nice surprise! They are quite tiny without any hair, and their eyes are not open. All I can do right now is guarantee the mother has enough food, so that she won't eat her babies. 2008/6/18 Womrats from The Sims 2 PetsOMG!! Sims are lucky to be able to have womrats!!! Those little creatures are just like my hamsters...LOL...It seems hamsters are not just popular here in my dorm...
Where Is My U-Disk!!!Darn!! I thought I lost my wallet last week, and I was mad because I never lost anything big in my entire life. However I found it in my locked drawer in the office in the end, and it proved that I am a very careful person, now that I even lock my drawer every time I am absent from my cubicle. This time I don't think I might be that lucky. I have been searching everywhere for my 1G u-disk, which I got for free during the first day on board. Though it cannot work on most laptops, it works just fine on my two laptops. It's been several days now, and I guess the chance of finding it might well be slim now...Sigh~~~I lose things...It's normal, isn't it? People lose things...It means I have to use my back-up u-disk now... I am going to buy an 120G portable hard disk for my mass storage, since I will have to move out of campus, and surely people should get some right profit before their departure. Some classic movies, PC games(The Sims 2 rocks, don't even let me get in that one) and some useful software. As a matter of fact, the hard disk has already arrived, and I need to pick it up later today...The reason I chose 120G instead of 250G is because most hard disk cases cannot guarantee the stable performance of 160G or even bigger like 250G hard disk without another adaptor, so it's pretty inconvenient to put another adaptor on the desk with other messy wires. Plus 120G is enough already. The larger the hard disk is, the more likely we are to be frustrated when the hard disk collapses one day with our precious photos, files and most of all, our memories gone. I have been there, so I need to know how to protect myself. This is not just for me, everybody should know that. Another thing is, since I am really interested in iPod nano the 3rd lately, I am thinking of getting one. Well, actually I began to like iPod ever since I found iPhone is quite interesting lately, playing with it from one of my colleagues, but the signal quality and usage are quite mediocre. So I started to want one just with the apple's click wheel which is like Apple's signature. iPod classic has larger space, like 80 and 160G, and yet the hard disk type is quite fragile and the failure rate is much higher than flash memory type like nano. So I think nano would be perfect for me. Also, as only iPod nano 3rd 8G has mint green color, I would choose 8 G nano. Plus 8G is better than 4G nano, from the aspects of both price and practical use. Anyway, up till now, my u-disk is till missing...:( 2008/6/10 Dreaming What I Having Been Dreaming"Water flowing down and people climbing up". It's quite natural in this world. Seldom do I have such a time to sit here daydreaming. Yet while tasting others' lives on blogs, I am realizing I am still far from what I want to become, and the road to there is still blurry and gloomy, to be honest. The only good thing is it seems I have a start right now. Though a different start, it's still a start. Now I have lots of choices, and I can become whatever I want to become. All depends on me...I hate pressure, and yet like always, we confront pressure if we want to do something. We are forced to make a living, because life is not easy for any one of us. We were forced to take the exams, because we could not have been able to go to universities otherwise. We were forced to do many things, because otherwise it might well be against our wills. So that means we are fighting all the time. I know that well, but paradoxically, I am not aware that I am not doing it quite well. Seriously, I need to have the guts to fight for what I have been dreaming of now!!! 2008/6/7 One Bite Doesn't HurtI was trying to show one of my strongest hamsters to my colleagues, and never did I think he bit me on my index finger so hard that I bled all over the floor. The fat hamster didn't let go until I threw him on the ground. That was the hardest bite I ever had by an animal in my entire life. I suddenly ran to the bathroom to clean my wound. I was a little bit worried about the bite, since there might be something wrong with his teeth, like germs and viruses. Later, I looked up the information about hamsters bites, and all I got was it would be ok if I just washed the wound. Well, I just did, so that means I will be ok? Another interesting thing is it's said if someone is bitten by the hamster to bleed, then the person will get some lucky money afterwards. So I completely calmed down after I cleaned my finger, sitting on the chair observing those little bastards. Right before I wanted to go to bed, one of my classmates showed up, and he handed me two hundred and forty RMB, saying it's from the publisher who I mailed my papers to. Wow, it was such a long time ago that I don't even remember, and now after the bite I got the money. Interesting! The superstition is true. So whenever you need any money, just let the hamsters bite you real hard, and you will get the money out of it. Free Yogurt NeededOnly some kind of teas, coffee, coke, ice tea and orange juice are provided right now, so we are indirectly forced to drink them every day unless we just want to have a glass of pure water, which is considered to be not so smart, since all those beverages are free. I just hope there could some yogurt provided in the pantry, so that I won't need to buy them every time I get back. Well, yogurt is really good, because, first of all, yogurt is good for the stomach, and it helps to clean our body; secondly, yogurt is just as much as one can of orange juice, and there is definitely no more cost for it. So, for the sake of our health and the company's budget, yogurt is all good. But, at the same time, yogurt helps to nod off, so I guess maybe that's the main reason why it's not in the pantry...Thus, currently, all I can do is, again, to daydream here... |
